Chelmsford managed to finish the season with their heads up high after a superb performance against Bromley & Beckenham in the last game of the season. The game was in presence of a great crowd.

Right from the off Chelmsford put pressure on the opposition. Chelmsford were happy for Bromley to pass the ball round the back with no real threat of attack and managed to steal the ball from them on a number of occasions counter attacking with the opposition short at the back. This led to Chelmsford’s first goal in the 11th minute when a short corner was won after a powerful cross was shelled in from Ed Stanhope onto the foot of a Brom-Bec player. The short corner was turned in by Adam Hunter with a brilliant deflection into the top corner.

With Chelmsford in the lead Bromley & Beckenham won a few short corners at the end of the half, however ‘keeper Jason Evans made easy work of the flicks with the opposition running out of ideas how to break the Chelmsford defence down. Half-time and Chelmsford had the lead. All they had to do was continue to play in the same fashion with lots of quick short sharp passes.

Chelmsford continued to create chances and were rewarded in the 41st minute. Marc Pike’s weaving run down the right (after a throughball from Elliott Seleska) was stopped by an opposition defender’s poor challenge which would of prevented a certain goal. The short corner led to a goal from Luke ‘hangover’ Mepham who followed up a rebound to slot the ball home so Pike was happy to claim an assist.

Dan Osborne came off the bench in the 2nd half to replace Jason Evans in goal. He made number of good saves which was complimented by an off the line clearance by David Hunter from a short corner to keep our clean sheet.

Chelmsford were then given an advantage when the Bromley & Beckenham captain was sent off for ‘chat’ after the umpire becamed tired of his whining and complaining throughout the game. This created more chances however they were not able to score again when Will Hales won a short corner with his mesmerizing skills in the 65th minute. Goalkeeper Jason Evans (now on pitch) flicked a superb shundacock drag flick passed the opposing keeper who could do nothing about it. This new flicking technique is something I think we will see a lot more in the future. 3-0 final result, first clean sheet of the season and Chelmsford can finish the son on a high wondering if they performed like this all season would they be in the same position they are in now? Despite this they have been relegated to the East Premier A, however performances like this next season are what is needed to bounce straight back up again and regain National League status which every single player is confident of doing.
