Chelmsford’s return to winning form continued in this highly contested match that saw them take the points with greater worth than the scoreline would indicate and places them in a clear third position in the league. With several first choice players missing from the squad, coach Alan Lindsay reshaped the midfield and front line to excellent effect and Chelmsford created numerous goal chances. The solid and experienced defence of Hayley Heggie and Marie Kirkham was supported by the ever-improving youngsters Jess Ecott and Rosie Patterson. The midfield was dominated by the ranging Beccy Budd and Louisa Smith with Rebecca Alltree breaking up Old Loughts’ efforts on the right wing. Alltree was also key in turning possession into attacking play to pressurise Old Loughts. But Old Loughts remained resolute and dangerous, they had chances of their own and midway through the first half a clear scoring opportunity looked like giving them a surprise lead but an unfortunate air shot let Chelmsford off the hook. After half an hour a determined run into the D by Budd resulted in a short corner. Kate Maxey was primed to strike home but the ball bobbled away. Unphased, Maxey quick-stepped to her right to crack an excellent shot in to give Chelmsford a rightful 1-0 lead. The second half saw open, flowing play with Chelmsford firing in dangerous balls to the front runners in the D at every opportunity. Sarah Glanvill and Beth Wild sought to nudge in fast cross-D passes but the final touch proved elusive. Chelmsford did not sit back on their lead and sustained their commitment to seek further goals and a couple of short corners followed. Old Loughts denied Chelmsford any further goals but the tight control Chelmsford exercised ensured they took the 3 points. Chelmsford’s last game of the season is away at already-relegated Northampton Saints on Saturday 27 March. A win will ensure third place and would be an excellent testimony to the quality and achievements of the newly formed squad this year. Pushback is at 2.00pm.
