What a team effort! Everyone was a little rusty after our extended break but the ladies did the club proud.
Colchester are a tough physical team who shall we say have some experienced players and have known eachother for a few years. Consequently they play a good standard of Hockey.
Certainly the whole game was a close and tight affair. Both teams moved the ball around well and worked extremely hard but I think we edged it because we played as a team. The first goal was as a result of some good play from defence to Sam Blair in the middle who gave a superb ball to Alison Ward who certainly made sure their GK had no chance with a stinging shot. Chances ebbed and flowed both ways but anything that they tried was safely dealt with by our able defence led by Claire Dixon.
The second half saw us repel some strong pressure from Colchester for the first ten minutes but a superb save by an extremely stretchy Naomi Ashford kept us safe. Another great move by us saw the ball firmly dispatched between the posts again by Alison Ward (who only failed to get her hat trick by an early whistle for a SC as the ball went into the net earlier). Despite some more pressure and heroics by our defence and some cracking saves by Naomi Ashford we ran out (worthy) winners.
The ladies gave a supreme effort and I am sure there will have been some aching bodies after the match as there were some very tired legs by the end of the game. Well done indeed!
Roger.
