Chelmsford’s return to East League Premier A action ended in disappointment as they were frustrated by a dogged Dereham side. Although Chelmsford probably edged the game in terms of possession and goalscoring chances, they can put their defeat down to a lack of discipline in crucial periods of the game.

Having thrashed Dereham 6-0 earlier in the season, Chelmsford were keen to assert their supposed superiority from the start. However, on a quick but bobbly pitch, Chelmsford struggled to settle as time and again their first touch let them down. Neither side looked dangerous in front of goal until 20 minutes in when a rash sliding tackle from Tom Fanger led to a penalty stroke for the hosts which was despatched confidently into the top corner.

As the half wore on, the Dereham keeper was finally called into action but was equal to the task when making a smart double save from Adam Hunter and Harry Rayner which protected their slender lead into the half time interval.

Chelmsford started the second period with more purpose, and with Dereham pinned in their own half for long periods, they soon drew level. Mike Millane intercepted a poor clearance from the Dereham defence and swiftly fed the ball to Hunter in the D who was felled as he tried to round the keeper, and Rayner stepped up to the penalty spot for a carbon copy of Dereham’s opener.

With further goals in the offing, the visitors continued to press forward, but the game was turned on its head with 15 minutes remaining. A break by Dereham was broken up by Rob Hartley with another sliding tackle in the D, and the umpire had no hesitation in awarding the third penalty stroke of the game. Although the finish this time was less than emphatic, it just did enough to sneak Dereham back in front.

Worse was to follow as Chelmsford prepared to restart when player coach Dillet Gilkes was sin binned for alleged dissent, and the dominance they had enjoyed all but disappeared. Dereham could now absorb Chelmsford’s forays forward with relative ease, and with the clock ticking down, Dereham’s set piece specialist secured his hat-trick and the result with a late penalty corner low in the Chelmsford goal.

Next week Chelmsford hope to get their season back on track with a visit to Cambridge University (12.30 start).
