Chelmsford travelled to Watford hoping to build on a great team performance against Dereham the previous week, with a win against West Herts essential given the very real threat of relegation. In the first half Chelmsford were a shadow of the committed cohesive team of the previous week and allowed West Herts to control the game. As a result Chelmsford found themselves 3-0 down at half time. Chelmsford had a few chances but despite having the beating of a slow West Herts defence, failed to score. Following captain Lisa Crane's example, Chelmsford's work rate improved in the second half and an Ally Farrar goal with 15 to go gave Chelmsford some hope, but unfortunately the fightback did not materialise. Kat Letts, Becky Budd and Karen Cooper worked tirelessly in midfield and Anna Smith, as well as marshalling the back line, pushed forward to pressure the West Herts defence. Chelmsford failed to convert a number of short corners and the game finished 3-1. This was a bad loss for Chelmsford, not only due to the precarious league position but because of the manner of the defeat. If Chelmsford are to avoid relegation each and every player must give 100% committment against Cambridge University at Chelmer Park on Saturday 13 March 2010. Chelmsford must back up their undoubted talent with hard work and fight for 70 minutes. |
