The day after their best win of the season, which made them safe from any threat of relegation, Chelmsford Ladies 2nd XI took on Lowestoft Ladies 1st XI in the last game of the season in another physical encounter; knowing that a draw would move them up one place to 6th or a win to take them to 5th. Lowestoft, however, had all to play for requiring a win by two clear goals to stave off relegation themselves. Within the opening minutes Chelmsford knew they had a real game on their hands. With only 11 players, and with one or two already carrying injuries, Chelmsford had to adapt players to unfamiliar positions. However, with real spirit and a good tactical game plan directed by acting coach Alan Lindsey on the sideline, Chelmsford were clearly unfazed and soon organised things on the field. The first half was played at a good pace, with both sides enjoying lengthy spells of pressure. Lowestoft’s left winger was handed a green card after one too many fouls, although this failed to dissuade Lowestoft’s total commitment. Having forced a couple of short corners, Lowestoft opened the scoring, but Chelmsford hit back after Toni Speakman (joint player of the match) drove the ball into the ‘D’ for Judith Duffin to sweep it in for an equaliser. Despite the hot weather and Chelmsford having no subs on the bench, the second half continued at the same pace with Lowestoft having a couple of shots early on. However, it was Chelmsford who forced a couple of short corners and out of the second it was Anna Smith who crossed for Kat Letts to sweep in for Chelmsford to take the lead. Lowestoft refused to buckle after a period of sustained pressure and following their own short corner, were awarded a penalty flick after a foot stopped the ball on the goal line. Vanessa Smith playing another excellent game (the other joint player of the match) and came to the rescue with a fine save. However, Lowestoft were not to be denied and soon forced an equaliser. Both sides had chances for a winner, Chelmsford making some excellent fast breaks and forcing further short corners. Judith Duffin picked up a yellow card for an unfortunate trip, but Chelmsford refused to wilt. A draw was the right result in what was a very exciting and committed game, and a very satisfying weekend’s hockey for the Ladies 2nd XI - a positive way to end the season so bring on “Ladies Night”!
